GLOVERSVILLE, NY – At a dinner held November 7 at The Holiday Inn in Johnstown, the staff of Palmer Pharmacy in Johnstown was recognized as the recipient of the 2013 Gregory R. Hoye Award; an honor that is given each year jointly by Mountain Valley Hospice and the Hoye family.  Presented by AnnaMarie Hoye, a representative of the Hoye family, the Hoye Award is given to someone who has demonstrated sensitive and compassionate care to the needs of patients and families dealing with life-limiting illnesses.  It is given in memory of Gregory R. Hoye who passed away in 1987.

In the nomination read by Hoye it was noted that Hospice patients often experience distressing symptoms which can occur quickly and without warning at any time of the day or evening and require immediate intervention.  The staff at Palmer’s has responded to the needs of hospice patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, holidays, weekends and in all types of weather.  It is impossible to count the numerous times that the pharmacists at Palmer’s have opened the doors for us at 2, 3 or even 4am telling the on call nurse to “meet me at the side door.” “Despite all of the changes at Mountain Valley Hospice in 27 years, the staff at Palmer Pharmacy has always been there to provide support.  They have without reservation served hospice patients with professionalism, efficiency and compassion, and we are forever grateful,” said Hoye.

Nominees for the Hoye Award are submitted by business and community partners.  Other nominees for the 2013 Hoye Award were Mrs. Susan Frasier, RN, COO, Mountain Valley Hospice, Dr. Joanne Porter, Albany Medical Center; Susan Casler, NP, St. Mary’s Hospital;  Mrs. Susan Hathaway-Ringland, Hospice volunteer and board member and Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams, Chaplain, Mountain Valley Hospice.
