The Chaplaincy Fund
Seeded by a family from Western New York whose local relatives have benefited for more than 25 years from the services of MVH Chaplain R.W. Williams, this fund supports our ability to provide spiritual support and guidance to residents. Nondenominational in nature unless otherwise requested, R.W. visits community members in their homes, meets with small groups in local restaurants or community centers, and is available by phone for a supportive ear. R.W. also co-hosts memorial services and bereavement sessions at the Nancy Dowd Hospice House.
Bereavement Counseling
Our Masters-prepared Social Workers meet free of charge with anyone who is grieving the loss of a loved one. There is no requirement that the person seeking support is connected to a patient who was a on the Hospice service. Sessions take place at the Nancy Dowd Hospice House in our library or can also be arranged to take place at a convenient community location.
Bereavement Group Sessions
The MVH interdisciplinary team hosts a variety of group support sessions for the newly bereaved and those living with losses that are not recent. Again, these services are free of charge and do not require a specific connection to a patient who participated in the Hospice care team.
Soup Group
New in 2018, this is an informal interdisciplinary group that meets over lunch for supportive conversation and camaraderie. It’s a more informal approach to grief counselling. As with many of our ancillary services, there is no charge to participate.
Grief Education at Local School Systems
A sad side effect of society’s escalating violence is the more frequent need for grief support and education for all ages. Our Masters-prepared social workers partner free of charge with local guidance counsellors in the school systems to provide educational resources and mentoring. Our team also offers to meet one-on-one with parents to coach them through the process of getting their children the resources they need to heal.
Bed & Breakfast Respite Stay - $1,500 for a 5-night stay
A mainstay of Hospice is the option for patients on service to visit the Nancy Dowd Hospice Home for a 5-night stay to give their loved ones a respite for full-time caregiving. Room and board at the NDHH costs $300 per day, with a 5-night stay totaling $1,500. Current state and federal law prohibit Hospices from billing for these “Respite Stays,” which essentially result in charity care from our operational budget – a cost of doing business.
